Summary: | On June 16th 2021, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6 RS was centered in Tehoru,
Taluti Bay, triggering an underwater landslide, resulting a rise in the water level of
around 51 cm in Tehoru. This event was relatively small compared to the Elpaputih
Bay Tsunami (west of Taluti Bay) with a maximum wave height of 9 meters on
September 20th 1899 due to an underwater landslide triggered by an earthquake with
a magnitude of 7.8 RS. The 2021 tsunami event indicates the possibility of tsunami
due to landslides in the future. Thus, a review of the 1899 and 2021 Seram Island
tsunami generation mechanisms is needed to support studies of potential tsunami
characteristics on the southern part of Seram Island in the future.
A tsunami simulation was carried out using the COMCOT model by applying the
Non-Linear Shallow Water Equation. The simulation was carried out using
BATNAS and DEMNAS topographic and bathymetric data which were validated
using Aida Numbers against observed tide gauge data at Tehoru and Amahai
Stations. Based on four landslide scenarios for the 2021 Tsunami according to
information in local news, a landslide with dimensions of 4000 × 4000 × 50 m3
produces waves with a phase and height that meets the 20% confidence interval of
the Aida Number, with a K value of 1.19 and ???? 1.19.
Based on five landslide scenarios for the 1899 Tsunami according to historical
records, landslides with sources in Samasuru - Paulohi Village, Elpaputih Bay and
in Tehoru Village, Taluti Bay produced tsunami simulation that closest to historical
tsunami characteristics. This scenario produces a maximum tsunami height of 15.22
meters in Elpaputih Bay and 11.72 meters in Taluti Bay with arrival times of 5 and
1 minute respectively. The maximum flow depth reaches 15 meters around Paulohi,
Elpaputih Bay and 6 - 9 meters around Laimu, Taluti Bay.
A tsunami caused by a hypothetical landslide in Saunulu Village, Taluti Bay with
landslide parameters was made twice as large as the 2021 tsunami event and with a
horizontal landslide distance up to 800 meters can produce waves with a maximum
amplitude of 21.74 meters with an arrival time of 2 minutes and a flow depth that
can exceed 15 meters around Tehoru, Taluti Bay. |
