Description
Summary:Long and thick eyelashes have become a standard of beauty in many cultures. Having a long eyelash can increase self-confidence and has been described as having a positive psychological effect. Natural ingredients, such as almond oil, are often used to help hair growth. This study aims to find out the optimum formula for almond oil eyelash serum and to evaluate the effects on eye irritation and hair growth. Almond oil was formulated into a nanoemulsion to enhance its penetration to the hair follicles and provide a better hair growth effect. The optimum formula of the eyelash serum consists almond oil 5% (w/v), tween 80 4,375% (w/v), span 80 0,625% (w/v), carbopol 0,5% (w/v), TEA 1% (w/v), sodium propionate 0,01% (w/v), sodium metabisulfite 0,05% (w/v), phosphate buffer pH 7,4, dan aquadest. Almond oil eyelash serum was stable in storage at hight, low, and room temperatures, with globular size 105,1 ± 1,4, polydispersity index value of 0,286 ± 0,04, and pH 7,58. The effect of eyelash serum in promoting hair growth was tested in vivo in male Swiss Webster mice for 15 days by observing length and weight of its hair. The hair growth test shows that almond oil eyelash serum had a growing hair effect equivalent to minoxidil 2% as standard drug (P>0,05). Eye irritation test was evaluated using the in vitro hen's eggs chorioallantoic membrane test. HET CAM test results indicated that eyelash serum did not cause eye irritation with irritation score 0,57.
