ESTIMATION OF MANGROVE CARBON STOCK IN MUNDU COAST, CIREBON REGENCY

Mangroves can store and sequester comparatively high amounts of carbon, in both biomass and soils. This research aims to determine the environmental characteristics, condition of mangrove community structure, and to estimate the potential carbon stocks in rehabilitated mangrove forests on Mundu C...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/82559 Mangroves can store and sequester comparatively high amounts of carbon, in both biomass and soils. This research aims to determine the environmental characteristics, condition of mangrove community structure, and to estimate the potential carbon stocks in rehabilitated mangrove forests on Mundu Coast, Cirebon Regency. This research used mangrove survey data and sediment samples which were conducted on January 15th-17th and 20th 2024 in 15 plots. Measurement of community structure and estimation of live biomass carbon stock used a non destructive method by measuring stem diameter (DBH). Sediment samples were taken using the coring method using a sampling auger to a depth of 100 cm. The estimation of live biomass carbon stock were calculated using allometric equations and conversion factor. The estimation of sediment organic carbon stock were analyzed using the Loss on Ignition (LOI) method and conversion factor. The Mundu Coast has a tidal range of around 0,57-1,11 m (microtidal). Based on measurement results from January 15th-16th 2024, the Mundu Coast has marine water quality suitable for mangrove habitat. The river discharge value at Citemu River Estuary is 1,295 m3/s and in Mundu Estuary it is around 0,403 m3/s. For the current characteristics on the Mundu Coast, the average current speed at all station points towards high tide conditions is 0,109 m/s, while towards low tide it is 0,055 m/s. The mangrove forests on the Mundu Coast consist of the dominating species Avicennia marina (a natural species), and Rhizophora mucronata. Mangrove density ranges from 4.358-7.898 stand/hectare with a relatively good density. The results of the carbon stock estimation research showed that the average total mangrove carbon stock on the Mundu Coast is 355,85±55,23 MgC/Ha with details of 58,11±14,82 MgC/Ha in the upper and lower living biomass, as well as sediment 297,74±41,11 MgC/Ha. Pearson correlation test results showed that total carbon stock is significantly correlated with total basal area (P<0,05) and total land cover (P<0,01), biomass carbon stock also significantly correlated with basal area and total land cover (P<0,05). Sediment carbon stock significantly correlated with %Corg and total biomass (P<0,01), and total basal area (P<0,05). %Corg, biomass, and basal area are controlling factors for mangrove sediment carbon stocks on the Mundu Coast. text
