Medicinal products that made from plants have improved people's health and well-being for many years. Basil leaves (Ocimum americanum L.) can be used as an alternative to treat inflammation by utilizing polyphenol and flavonoid content. The flavonoid content in basil plants is largely responsible for providing various therapeutic potentials including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. The aim of this study was to test the anti-inflammatory activity of basil leaves in vitro using methods of inhibiting protein denaturation and membrane stabilization. The 70% ethanol extract of basil leaves has activity to inhibit protein denaturation and membrane stabilization with IC50 of 66.53 ± 1.52 and 1589.76 ± 119.41 respectively. The IC50 values of fraction 14, fraction 15, fraction 16-17, fraction 18-19 in the protein denaturation test were respectively 62.24 ± 7.20; 179.25 ± 15.67; 1077.50 ± 168.59; 419.35 ± 53.52. Fraction 14 (ethyl acetate-methanol 7:3) is the fraction that has the best activity value characterized by the smallest IC50 value close to the positive control IC50. The observation results were analyzed using One-way anova. The characterization results showed that fraction 14 using the densitometry TLC method had a spectrum pattern of flavonoid compounds. text |
