The Bontobahari Pier, serving as a Fish Landing Port (PPI) that has been neglected for decades and as a historic hub for Pinisi shipbuilding, offers a significant opportunity for developing a tourism area that integrates cultural preservation and local economic enhancement. This study examines the design principles of the Bugis-Makassar maritime cultural tourism area at Bontobahari Pier, Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi. The main goal of this research is to design a tourism area that not only focuses on tourism and economic aspects but also on the preservation of the rich maritime culture. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with a fragmental design method. Data were collected through observations, interviews with local stakeholders, and literature and precedent studies from similar areas. An analysis was conducted on the potential and issues of the area both internally and externally. The findings indicate that Bontobahari Pier has significant potential to be developed into a maritime cultural tourism area with several key design principles, namely the integration of tourism functions with fishing port functions and cultural preservation. By implementing these design principles, it is expected that Bontobahari Pier will become a sustainable tourism destination, enhancing the welfare of the local community, and preserving the maritime cultural heritage of the Bugis-Makassar. This research aims to contribute to the literature on the planning of maritime cultural tourism areas and can serve as a reference for the development of similar areas in the future. text
