SYNTHESIS OF 1,2-PENTANEDIOL FROM FURFURALDEHYDE CATALYZED BY VANADYL@MOF-808
Furfuraldehyde (FALD) is a biomass derivative obtained from the hydrolysis of hemicellulose using an acid catalyst. FALD can be converted to various compounds, e.g., 1,2-pentanediol (1,2-PeD). 1,2-PeD is widely used as a raw material for cosmetics, disinfectants, polymers, and pharmaceuticals. 1,2-P...

Summary: | Furfuraldehyde (FALD) is a biomass derivative obtained from the hydrolysis of hemicellulose using an acid catalyst. FALD can be converted to various compounds, e.g., 1,2-pentanediol (1,2-PeD). 1,2-PeD is widely used as a raw material for cosmetics, disinfectants, polymers, and pharmaceuticals. 1,2-PeD can be synthesized from the hydrogenolysis of FALD. Pt, Rh, and Ru are examples of platinum-group metals that are commonly used as catalysts in the hydrogenolysis of FALD to 1,2-PeD. However, platinum-group metals have a low abundance in nature. Such reactions used high-pressure H2 gas (20–35 bar). Alcohol and organic acids may replace the use of pressurized hydrogen. This research aims to develop a non-platinum-group metal-based catalyst for hydrogenolysis of FALD to 1,2-PeD with alcohol as a hydrogen source. MOF-808 has been reported to be active in the hydrogenolysis of FALD to 1,2-PeD with very low yield (9%). Our group has found that UiO-66 functionalized with VO(acac)2 was active in the FALD hydrogenolysis to give 1,2-PeD of 25%. This indicates that the presence of vanadyl in the MOF enhances its catalytic activity. This research uses the vanadil@MOF-808 catalyst, which is synthesized by refluxing MOF-808 with various vanadyl complexes, i.e., VO(acac)2, VOSO4, VO(phenoxyimine)2, VO(salen), and VO(salophen). The catalyst was characterized by powder X-ray Diffraction (P-XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The catalytic activity test was carried out using 75 mg catalyst (0.087 mmol vanadium), 3 mmol FALD, and 10 mL 2-propanol. The catalytic results were analyzed by Gas Chromatography (GC). The results showed vanadil@MOF-808 from VO(acac)2 gave FALD conversion of >99%, 1,2-PeD yield of 91%, and selectivity of 91%. The reaction was carried out at 160 °C for 11 h. The turnover frequency (TOF) of the reaction was 2.85 h-1. |
