Description
Summary:The world is currently facing significant challenges as the world's population increases rapidly. UN forecasts (2022) show that in the next three decades, we will see the proportion of the elderly population increase, reaching 11.7% in 2030 and 16.4% in 2050. Indonesia has experienced an aging demographic structure since 2021 (BPS, 2021). This phenomenon marks a demographic change that has led to an increase in the elderly population who are vulnerable to various diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease, a form of dementia that impairs cognitive function, has become a global health problem. Research shows that the incidence of Alzheimer's disease increased by 147.95% from 1990 to 2019, and in 2020, approximately 55 million people worldwide suffered from dementia and approximately 85% of them did not receive full treatment (Alzheimer's Disease International, 2023). In Indonesia, the number of cases of Alzheimer's disease continues to increase, reaching 1.2 million in 2022 and is estimated to reach 4 million in 2050 (CNN, 2022). The aging process, coupled with the increasing incidence of Alzheimer's disease, emphasizes the need for urgent attention to health policies, care facilities, and support systems. To meet the needs of people with Alzheimer's disease, design principles are key. The Fleming-Bennett design principles, developed by Professors Richard Fleming and Kirsty Bennett, focus on maintaining or enhancing patient capabilities, creating readable, flexible, and adaptive environments that support activities of daily living, facilitate social interaction, and ensure safety and comfort. The importance of developing health policies and designing effective care facilities is fundamental in creating a fully supportive environment for people with Alzheimer's disease, ensuring their health and dignity. This comprehensive approach is needed to overcome the challenges facing Alzheimer's disease in the context of Indonesia's aging population.
