DEVELOPMENT OF A CROSSING SAFETY MODEL IN CIMAHI CITY (CASE STUDY: UNSIGNALED THREE-ARM INTERSECTION)

The increase in population, accompanied by the rise in the number of vehicles, has driven the growth in traffic accidents. Statistics show that 25,266 people died due to traffic accidents in Indonesia in 2021, with pedestrians being the most vulnerable group of road users. The city of Cimahi in West...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/83090 The increase in population, accompanied by the rise in the number of vehicles, has driven the growth in traffic accidents. Statistics show that 25,266 people died due to traffic accidents in Indonesia in 2021, with pedestrians being the most vulnerable group of road users. The city of Cimahi in West Java, with its high population and vehicle density, has an urgent need to enhance pedestrian safety. This study aims to develop a model that can assess the safety levels of road crossings. The research examined 15 unsignalized three-legged intersections with a total of 42 observation points. The safety index model was developed by adopting the PedISI model, which is based on multiple linear regression. In this model, the safety perception of road crossers is linked to the traffic and physical characteristics of an intersection arm. The results of the modeling indicate that the variables affecting the safety perception of crossings are traffic volume, 85th percentile speed, lane width, and median width. Furthermore, the implementation of the developed regression model shows that the average safety perception value for intersection arms in the city of Cimahi is 3.17, with 17 arms categorized as safe, 18 arms as moderately safe, and 7 arms as unsafe. text
