THE EFFECT OF PLANTING RED BEAN (PHASEOLUS VULGARIS L.) AND WEDELIA (WEDELIA TRILOBATA) AS FORM OF WEED CONTROL IN PEPPER PLANTATIONS

Weeds are plants whose appearance is not desired and can affect the growth of major plants. At PT Cinquer Agro Nusantara pepper plantations, weed control is a problem that needs to be solved due to its expensive costs. Common method in weed control is to use herbicides. However, the use of chemical herbicides can reduce pepper plant productions and damage the environment. Therefore, a more sustainable and harmless weed control methods need to be used in the form of planting cover crop. Cover Crop is a plant used as a soil cover and grown among the main plants with rapid growth. This research used red bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and wedelia (Wedelia trilobata) as a soil cover plant in pepper plantations. The study aims to determine the impact of planting cover crop plants on weeds growth in pepper plantations and obtain the growth and production of red bean plants planted in pepper plantations. The results of the study showed that the growing rate of red bean plant has a growth rate of cover area of 0.95%/week and the rate of leaves growth is 0.93 strands/week, with a total harvest weight of 26.278 grams, seed weight of 1.303 grams, seed number of 2.99, pod number of 1.69, and pod length of 7.49 cm. The growth of area covering rate of wedelia is 0.4%/week and rate of growth of wedelia leaves is 1.16 strands/week. Based on t-test hypothesis with the use of alpha 0.05, it is found that planting red beans and wedelia plants had no significant influence on the rate of weed growth coverage and weed height due to the rate of weed growth is faster than the growth of red bean and wedelia plants. text |
