Other substances in PVC material and in its environment may inhibit or accelerate the degrada - tion. In marine environment, photodegradation of PVC is influenced by oxygen, water, and sodium-chloride content. In this work, the photodegradation of PVC plate in sodium- chloride solution environment, has been studied. PVC plate has been irradiated by artificial UV radiation, with wave length 250-580 nm, at 30°C, in the environment of air, water, and sodium-chloride solution (2,8%). The photodegradation under these conditions were followed by several measurement, e.g. weight change, tensile strength and elongation, intrinsic viscosity, infra-red and ultra-violet spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, and measurement of the degree of crystallinity by X-ray diffractometric methods. From the results obtained it is concluded that the ma-in factor effecting the phot:degradation of PVC material is abaorbtion of UV radiation in combination with the other environmental factors. Irradiation of PVC material by UV radiation in water environment produces a larger degradation product. In sodium-chloride solution environment, the common ion effect of chloride ion inhibits the dehydro - chlorination process and the following steps of photodegradation. text |
