Summary: | Bandung's journey as a World Design City has reached its peak since joining the
UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2015. The application of the ABCG+3C
formula in the city's creative ecosystem practices integrates the Design Actors;
Academia, Business, Community, and Government, through the stages of
Connect, Collaborate, and Commerce/Celebrate. The next step is to provide
facilities designed to maximize the impact of design, ensuring that each element
supports the city's main goals, meets community needs, and improves the overall
quality of life for its residents. Currently, Bandung's spatial planning focuses on
the provision of Green Open Spaces, which presents challenges in urban area
development. However, Bandung has significant potential in utilizing heritage
buildings that can be adapted into alternative public spaces. The character of
public facilities in unconventional locations has become a hallmark of creative
public spaces in Bandung, with strong support from government elements In this
context, the facilities are designed as large-scale alternative public spaces on the
site of Gudang Persediaan Cikudapateuh, a complex of heritage buildings that
have been abandoned since 1987. This study is conducted through site analysis,
literature review, and interviews to highlight practical approaches in repurposing
historical buildings while maintaining their cultural significance. Adaptive reuse
is chosen as a solution to address challenges related to the maintenance and
revitalization of historic buildings amid growing urban needs. The outcome is an
interior design hub called, "Bandung Design Bloc," as a representative design
facility for the community-based city of Bandung. It is hoped that this final project
will raise public awareness, especially among government elements about the
importance of supporting the preservation of heritage buildings and the creative
ecosystem. With such support, Bandung is expected to have a strong image on the
global stage, and design will become impactful and distributed to the entire
community in this contemporary era. |
