Description
Summary:The Indonesia New Capital City Architecture and Urban Design competition is a field of contestation for architecture and urban designers to present their concept. The design of ‘Nagara Rimba Nusa’ by urban design and architecture firm URBAN+ was nominated to be the first-place winner. As the winning design, ‘Nagara Rimba Nusa’ was considered to fulfill the various aspects stated in the (TOR) of the New Capital City Urban Design Competition. It needs to be remarked that the TOR not only concern the technical aspects of urban design, but also terms and concepts acquired to be translated into built form One of which is the concept of national identity that is rife with political ideologies. Therefore, there needs to be further exploration on how the winning designer team translate these concepts. The planning documents in this context serve as not only the reflection of the designers' social process through negotiation and interaction within the design team, but also their capitals in the form of education and work experience. This also reflects the social process of the designers' outside of the design team, negotiating the network of fellow design professionals and the political expectations that came with the planning of the new capital city, with the designers' own idealism. The objective is to explore the various roles that designers take during the design process, and how their processes are reflected within the planning document. This research aims to comprehend the designer's position as a main political actor in nation building project, with the planning document itself the visual medium that reflected their social processes and translation of the national identity.
