Summary: | The application of adaptive reuse in transforming residential buildings into early
childhood school environments faces significant challenges. The design of learning
space facilities often does not fully meet the required standards, with limited space
and a lack of attention to specific aspects that support child development, becoming
obstacles in the learning process. The Bojongsoang Housing Estate in Bandung
Regency has several kindergartens that apply the concept of adaptive reuse. This
study aims to evaluate the extent to which early childhood school buildings with an
adaptive reuse approach meet the standards and principles of child-friendly
interior design and assess the building's support for early childhood developmental
tasks. The research method utilized field observation techniques, in-depth
interviews with principals, teachers, staff, and parents from six different schools,
as well as questionnaires filled out by 20 respondents, including key stakeholders
in education in these schools. Additionally, the research involved Focus Group
Discussions (FGDs) with three experts, including two architects and one interior
designer specialized in early childhood schools.
The results of this study show that the emphasis of adaptive reuse depends on the
existing conditions of the buildings in early childhood schools, leading to
shortcomings in meeting child-friendly interior design standards. These
deficiencies include aspects of safety, comfort, accessibility, and support for
children's cognitive, social, and motor development. Adaptive reuse buildings for
early childhood schools focus on two aspects: new interior-old exterior and
integrated filling, resulting in design compromises that meet functional needs but
do not fully adhere to government standards. |
