ADJUSTING IN CONTRAST: THE PROCESS OF SELF-ADAPTATION TO THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT THROUGH DRAWING
The human nature of always interacting with others does not necessarily ignore the role of distance in the system. The behavior of arranging distance from others and space to oneself is a subconsciously awakened response, which is studied as proxemic behavior. The writer understands this behavior...

The behavior of arranging distance from others and space to oneself is a subconsciously awakened response, which is studied as proxemic behavior. The writer understands this behavior as a method of drawing and the process results in a form of self-adaptation in the surrounding environment, especially urban as it is closest to the writer’s daily life. The writer combines elements of two contrasting lines, geometric and organic lines. Each of these lines is an element that comes from nature and environment that is simplified, derived its line properties, and recomposed starting from the creation of geometric line composition followed by organic line. The writer interprets the urban environment as something complex and tight depicted in black pen. Meanwhile the composition of organic line is meandering, tangling, and flexible to represent an act of adapting in which the process of drawing them responds to geometric composition. To strengthen the contrast between two, the writer uses only two different colors. “Melaras” means adjusting or fitting in in Malay. This final project series is the writer’s attempt to create spatial composition and arrange the distances between line interactions to directly express the writer’s position in the process of selfadapting in an urban environment. The resulting visual is a different form and composition in which the writer places a variety of interaction styles as the embodiment of “melaras” process that depends on the environment. text |

The human nature of always interacting with others does not necessarily ignore the
role of distance in the system. The behavior of arranging distance from others and
space to oneself is a subconsciously awakened response, which is studied as
proxemic behavior. The writer understands this behavior as a method of drawing
and the process results in a form of self-adaptation in the surrounding environment,
especially urban as it is closest to the writer’s daily life. The writer combines
elements of two contrasting lines, geometric and organic lines. Each of these lines
is an element that comes from nature and environment that is simplified, derived its
line properties, and recomposed starting from the creation of geometric line
composition followed by organic line. The writer interprets the urban environment
as something complex and tight depicted in black pen. Meanwhile the composition
of organic line is meandering, tangling, and flexible to represent an act of adapting
in which the process of drawing them responds to geometric composition. To
strengthen the contrast between two, the writer uses only two different colors.
“Melaras” means adjusting or fitting in in Malay. This final project series is the
writer’s attempt to create spatial composition and arrange the distances between
line interactions to directly express the writer’s position in the process of selfadapting
in an urban environment. The resulting visual is a different form and

embodiment of “melaras” process that depends on the environment. |
