Summary: | Indonesia has a diverse array of cultures. The island of Bali is a part of Indonesia that is rich in
culture and the arts. One of them is Barong. Barong is a cultural phenomenon deeply rooted in the
life of the Balinese people and is an essential part of Indonesian culture that needs to be preserved.
However, children often lack interest and knowledge in local cultures like Barong Bali. Due to its
somewhat intimidating appearance to children and their limited knowledge, they may misunderstand
Barong as a malevolent figure, whereas Barong represents positive energy, leading to
misconceptions about this cultural icon. Hence, it is vital to introduce Barong from an early age (5-
8 years old) when children are more likely to retain information due to their developing cognitive
abilities. This thesis aims to introduce Barong to children through an interactive picture book with
the hope of fostering greater interest and knowledge among them about Barong Bali. The data
collection methods for this thesis include literature review, analysis of similar works, interviews,
observations, and prototype testing. Through this interactive picture book Barong will be
introduced in a fun and engaging manner so that children do not get bored while learning about
Barong Bali, children will be given a task on helping the Barong in the story by doing solving the
problems on the interactive activity pages, thus increasing their creativity and interest in and
understanding of Barong Bali and shaping a new generation more familiar with Indonesian culture,
particularly Barong Bali. The result of this thesis is an interactive children book featuring a child’s
adventure in the world of Barong with interactive activity pages to help the Barong in the story.
