The culture of elopement is generally viewed with a negative connotation. However, unlike in other regions, the elopement tradition among the Sasak tribe of Lombok, known as merariq, is a time-honored tradition that continues to be practiced to this day. The low literacy rate in Indonesia has led to this tradition being less recognized, despite numerous research journals and articles discussing it. As times have changed, media such as webtoons have often been used by creators to highlight local cultural themes. This approach can also be used to introduce the merariq tradition to the Indonesian public. The design of this webtoon draws on data from literacy studies, doing interviews with Sasak Lombok nobleman, and looking at references to existing local webtoons. Based on the data collected, the merariq tradition is still preserved and is likely to continue being practiced, as most Sasak people believe it does not conflict with religious teachings. According to SEO SimilarWeb's 2023 website traffic data, Indonesia ranks as the third-largest user of LINE Webtoon, with the majority of users aged 18-24. Meanwhile, according to NAVER Webtoon’s IP Business Team Leader, Hee Youn Lee, the most popular genres on LINE Webtoon are romance and fantasy romance. Considering these various aspects, the introduction of the merariq tradition has been realized through a fantasy romance genre webtoon. The design results show that the merariq material can be presented at any time during the story, either through monologues or during dialogues between characters, depending on the appropriate moment.
