Summary: | Industry 4.0 is a digitalization trend that can provide a competitive advantage to
companies. A way to get in the digitalization process is through process automation and
data connectivity applied within a company. PT SKI, a subcontract manufacturing
company that processes metal products according to customer request, seeks to implement
process automation. This is seen as an alternative solution to address the quality
fluctuations resulting from human error in the plating process. Plating is a metal coating
process aimed at increasing corrosion resistance on metal and enhancing the aesthetic
value of workpieces. Currently, PT SKI’s plating process relies on human labour to move
workpieces and calculate processing time for each bath.
To understand the existing process conditions and identify potential improvement, the
engineering design method was reworked to adjust when designing this automation system.
This method follows stages that imitate the development of prototyping while evaluating
the fulfillment of each requirement. The stages are defining the problem, generating
alternative concepets, evaluating and selecting concept, detailing the design, testing, and
evaluating performance. The designed automation system will consist of PLC-based hoist
and cranes, with HMI to facilitate monitoring during implementation.
The resulting system design is divided into two modes: automated and manual. The manual
system can be used by operators when there is a need to repeat a specific process or when
the automated process cannot be executed. Meanwhile, the automated system can serve as
a reference for the company to help reduce on-site operators and increase productivity by
minimizing manual work processes. The HMI also facilitates operators in monitoring the
ongoing production process and provides the capability to intervene in the automated
process.
