Description
Summary:Increased human needs lead to excessive exploitation of ecosystems, thus damaging coastal ecosystems, so interventions with a holistic approach are needed to solve the problems. The holistic approach is carried out through a comprehensive understanding of the system using the SES analytical framework, which is a concept to study the complex interrelationships between humans and the environment. New knowledge and perspectives are also needed in intervention efforts carried out through management. The interaction process analysis of the parties involved in producing new knowledge and understanding of the system uses social learning. Understanding the interactions and characteristics of the system is needed as input for planning and strategies. Therefore, research is based on the interaction process of the social-ecological system and its influence on the system. This research explores the influence of the interaction process between the social and the ecological subsystems in the Social Ecological System framework on the entire coastal area system. The ecosystem management process, social learning process, and social learning outcomes were analyzed. This research was conducted in Mayangan Village and Legon Wetan Village, Subang Regency, West Java Province, coastal villages that have experienced ecosystem degradation due to coastal erosion. The theoretical basis of this research is social-ecological systems, adaptive management, and social learning. The Management and Transition Framework (MTF) is used to understand the interactions in the social-ecological systems of Mayangan Village and Legon Wetan Village. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study strategy. Data collection methods were conducted through interviews, FGDs, observations, and a review of various literature. The analysis was conducted using content analysis to draw conclusions systematically and objectively to validate the research. The results showed four main issues in the history of mangrove forest management processes in Mayangan and Legon Wetan Villages: mangrove exploitation, ecosystem damage, changing mindsets from exploitation to restoration, and adaptive management. Coastal erosion occurs due to various factors, including excessive clearing of mangrove forest land for ponds, reduction of sediment supplies due to the deflection of the Cipunagara River estuary, and land subsidenceiv resulting in ecosystem damage that has an impact on land loss, increased frequency and intensity of tidal floods, and decreased community economic capacity. Various mangrove restoration efforts have been carried out with assistance from outside the village, ranging from hard engineering to soft engineering. However, coastal erosion still occurs, so the efforts are still ineffective. The ineffectiveness is due to several obstacles faced in mangrove ecosystem restoration efforts, including the absence of a bridging actor to accommodate the social learning of actors, restoration efforts carried out are still fragmented due to low actor interaction, low community participation in mangrove restoration efforts, and the dependence of restoration efforts on external parties, especially in funding. This study has several limitations, one of which is analysing of the impact of mangrove restoration efforts on ecosystem resilience, so further research is needed. In addition, comprehensive planning is needed to conduct mangrove restoration. The study results are expected to serve as recommendations for mangrove ecosystem restoration efforts in Mayangan and Legon Wetan Villages.
