However, understanding of the job characteristics and the factors related to fatigue is still lacking. A good understanding of the freight train operation system and the factors that influence it can help design effective mitigation strategies. Therefore, this study aims to identify the risk factors that cause fatigue and how to mitigate them. The objectives of this research will be achieved through three studies: a preliminary study, a field study, and a laboratory experiment. The findings from these three studies will be used to design mitigation strategies. The preliminary study aims to understand the operational characteristics of freight train operations and the factors related to fatigue. Activities include distributing questionnaires, document reviews, and field observations. The results of these activities will be used for the second and third studies. Several findings overlap with the findings from other activities, such as long working hours, suboptimal rest duration, and the comfort and safety of Griya Karya. Additionally, this study also found the phenomenon of split sleep caused by job irregularities. The impact of this split sleep will be examined in the third study. The second study aims to understand the fatigue profile of train engineers during freight train operations, the level of fatigue during freight train operations, and the correlation between fatigue indicators during field measurements. Measurements include ocular indicators (video camera) and fatigue questionnaires (KSS and VAS). The research results show that the fatigue pattern during freight train operations is linear and cubic. Work shifts, train operation time, and train type are significantly related to fatigue. Furthermore, several ocular parameters were found to correlate strongly with subjective indicators, namely blink duration (BD), closed phase (CDP), microsleep per minute (MPM), and PERCLOS. The laboratory experiment in the third study aims to understand how the split-sleep phenomenon affects fatigue. This study is based on the finding that train engineers use the waiting time for departure at Griya Karya to sleep (findings in service flow and sub-theme 1.3 interviews). This activity needs further investigation to determine its impact on fatigue levels. Measurements include ocular indicators, brain waves, performance, and KSS and VAS questionnaires. The research results show that train operation is complex and irregular. In the laboratory experiment, iv it was found that split sleep and time significantly affect fatigue.
