Description
Summary:Light plays a significant role in buildings. In Catholic church spaces, lighting is not only required to meet worship needs but also supports the atmosphere, specifically the spiritual atmosphere within the church space. In Catholic teachings, light symbolizes something transcendent, such as the presence of God, truth, and hope. Gothic architecture is an architectural style often used in Catholic churches in various countries, including Indonesia. Gothic architectural design is considered to have ideal lighting techniques for church spaces that support a spiritual atmosphere. The Second Vatican Council, held from 1962 to 1965, encouraged the Church to undergo a process of cultural inculturation. This resulted in changes to church building designs, which also led to changes in church lighting techniques. This study examines the role of church space lighting techniques in Catholic churches built before and after the Second Vatican Council in supporting the spiritual atmosphere. The research is divided into two parts: the first part of the research involves measuring the physical condition and lighting of church spaces, and the second part consists of measuring the affective conditions and spiritual perceptions of respondents through a quantitative questionnaire. The results of the study indicate that light distribution, which can create hierarchy and visual orientation towards the altar, plays an important role in positively influencing affective conditions and supporting the spiritual atmosphere of the space. The study also found a relationship between affective states and spiritual perceptions, with a proportional relationship pattern. The roles of light intensity, color temperature, contrast, CRI, light source, type of lighting, visual comfort, temporal conditions/time, and space design are discussed.
