Sabu Island, located in East Nusa Tenggara, has a higher fraction of clear sky than other regions in Indonesia, but over time there will be an increase in the economy which is proportional to the increase in development. It is feared that this could damage Sabu Island’s night sky resources by reducing the value of night sky brightness due to light pollution, therefore mitigation efforts are needed. The purpose of this study is to review the potential and formulate a scientific basis related to the protection of the night sky of the Sabu Island area by making it a Dark Sky Places. The method of collecting data on the value of sky brightness is taken from two data, namely SQM which is measured directly on Sabu Island by taking two measurements, brightness data based on the VIIRS DNB satellite and lighting survey data is carried out by recording the number of problematic lighting lamps and looking at the light spectrum of lighting lamps. The results of this study found that the night sky brightness measurement values were quite good in the zenith direction for the time being, with the lighting conditions considered a little bad so that this made the all-sky brightness value and satellite data had a much smaller value from the zenith direction. The study also found that Sabu Raijua Regency has the potential to become a Dark Sky Place, specifically in the Dark Sky Park type, with locations such as Rae Mea Beach and Raijua Island as other candidates in a smaller scope. This research is considered sufficient to form the basis of an academic paper on sky protection regulations with some additions. text |

description |
Light pollution is the excessive use of artificial lighting that makes the night
sky brighter than before, making the stars or other celestial objects appear
dimmer and the beauty of the night sky cannot be perceived. Sabu Island,
located in East Nusa Tenggara, has a higher fraction of clear sky than other
regions in Indonesia, but over time there will be an increase in the economy
which is proportional to the increase in development. It is feared that this
could damage Sabu Island’s night sky resources by reducing the value of night
sky brightness due to light pollution, therefore mitigation efforts are needed.
The purpose of this study is to review the potential and formulate a scientific
basis related to the protection of the night sky of the Sabu Island area by
making it a Dark Sky Places. This research is observational, and descriptiveanalytical
to determine the state of light pollution of the Sabu Island sky by
measuring the value of the brightness of the Sabu Island night sky, surveying
community lighting lamps to become the basis for an academic paper on night
sky protection regulations. The method of collecting data on the value of sky
brightness is taken from two data, namely SQM which is measured directly
on Sabu Island by taking two measurements, brightness data based on the
VIIRS DNB satellite and lighting survey data is carried out by recording the
number of problematic lighting lamps and looking at the light spectrum of
lighting lamps. The results of this study found that the night sky brightness
measurement values were quite good in the zenith direction for the time being,
with the lighting conditions considered a little bad so that this made the all-sky
brightness value and satellite data had a much smaller value from the zenith
direction. The study also found that Sabu Raijua Regency has the potential
to become a Dark Sky Place, specifically in the Dark Sky Park type, with
locations such as Rae Mea Beach and Raijua Island as other candidates in a
smaller scope. This research is considered sufficient to form the basis of an
academic paper on sky protection regulations with some additions. |
