Description
Summary:Coking coal, which is specially processed to produce coke, is increasingly in demand in various industries. The wastewater generated from washing or refining coking coal contains small particles with a negative surface charge, which inhibits sedimentation. Improper disposal of wastewater can have a significant impact on the environment due to its high pollution potential. This study aims to characterize the physicochemical and mineralogical properties of coking coal wastewater to assess the degree of pollution and identify suitable treatment methods. Physicochemical analysis showed that the wastewater had a neutral pH of 7.1, conductivity of 26.6 µS/cm, temperature of 26.2?C, turbidity of 883 NTU, TDS of 162 mg/L, TSS of 2,362 mg/L, average particle size of 0,954 µm, and average zeta potential of -3.6 mW. Metal analysis using ICP-MS showed a total metal concentration of 64,488 mg/L and a dissolved metal concentration of 43,295 mg/L, with aluminum and calcium being the most prevalent. Mineralogical characterization using XRF and XRD methods showed that the solids content consisted of 76.5% kaolinite and 23.5% quartz. The jar test results showed a TSS removal efficiency of 97.36% with the addition of 100 mg/L PAC. This study provides a preliminary characterization of coking coal wastewater, which requires further analysis for effective treatment.
