The advantages of bamboo material lie in its higher elasticity compared to other natural materials, so bamboo is widely used as an organic building material. The utilization of bamboo as a building material for arch structures is dominated by bamboo poles, shaped into curved through a cutting technique. However, the utilization of bamboo splits in the form of bundled bamboo splits (BBS) as building structures is increasingly being applied due to its ease of use and environmentally friendly. Nevertheless, literature discussing about BBS as building structures is still very limited. This research employed the qualitative-quantitative method with a mixed-method approach. The qualitative method was used to explore bamboo bending techniques through the identification of bamboo buildings from images and interviews with architectural practitioners. The quantitative method with an experimental approach is used to assess the performance of BBS beams tied with galvanized wire and steel bands under load. Qualitative research indicates that bamboo type material influence bending techniques, structural components, and building functions. The cutting (V-slice) and bundling methods are widely used, but architects in case Bali and Lombok primarily rely on the cutting method (V-slice/geges/rep-repan). Bamboo poles is typically bent using the V-slice method, while bamboo splits and sticks are commonly bent through bundling. The bundling method employs galvanized wire, bamboo pins, epoxy glue, and steel clamps at intervals shorter than one meter. Experimental results reveal that BBS beams secured with galvanized wire exhibit 1.5 times greater elasticity compared to those bound with steel bands in contrast, BBS beams fastened with steel bands demonstrate superior stiffness, reducing structural deflection by 16.1% compared to those bound with galvanized wire. text |
