Summary: | White (1999) and Tolmats (2004) noted that national culture and ethnic culture are affecting the individual values. Olver & Mooradian (2002) also noted that individual values also influenced by nurture (outside environment) and nature (specifik characteristics of person) process. Differences in cultural norms and values among ethnic groups also reveal themselves in different work-related behaviors (Connor & Becker, 2003) and also affect job performance in an organization (Cox, lobel, & McLEod, 1991). The common measurement of work related behaviors is job performance. Boyatzis (1982) also noted that the whole measurement of individual or job performance relate to individual competence, job characteristics, and organization environment. Between the three components, literature is lack in examining the individual competence.<p> <br />

This study purposes to explore the effect of ethnic culture and personal values (nurture), and also personality trait (nature), to the competency in the context of Indonesian environment to provide a new conceptual model and significant empirical findings. This study will be held in manufacturing and services companies in Jakarta and Bandung.<p> <br />

Raw data was collected by giving questionnaire to employee of 4 companies (manufacturing & services) in Bandung & Jakarta. Data procesing was held using factor analysis, multiregression analysis and discriminant analysis. In this research, ethnic culture and personality trait did not affect personal value, but personal value and personality trait affect competence. |
