THE INFLUENCE OF WORKLOAD AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS ON WORK FATIGUE AND UNSAFE BEHAVIOR AT WORK (CASE STUDY: PT. X BANDUNG DISTRICT)

Workplace factors in the garment industry such as physical factors of the work environment, heavy workload and continuous work without rest combined with fatigue can be fatal due to unsafe behaviour patterns. This study uses the variables of physical factors of the work environment (temperature, humidity, and noise) and physical workload as independent variables, physical and mental fatigue as mediating variables, and unsafe behaviour at work as the dependent variable. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of workload and physical environmental factors on work fatigue and unsafe behaviour, both directly (direct effect) and indirectly (indirect effect) mediated by work fatigue. The study focused on 85 garment industry workers, measuring work environment temperature, humidity, noise, and physical workload. Physical fatigue was assessed before and after work using the Salivary Alpha-Amylase (sAA) method. Questionnaires on mental fatigue, mental load, and unsafe behaviour were also distributed to the workers. The effect of each variable was analysed using mediation - pathway regression analysis with the help of SPSS. Mental and physical workload directly influenced unsafe behaviour (? = 0.316, p = 0.003; ? = 0.222, p = 0.033). Mental workload significantly influenced mental and physical fatigue (? = 0.18, p = 0.046; ? = 0.249, p = 0.0022). Mental workload indirectly impacts unsafe behaviour through mental fatigue (? = 0.288, p = 0.004). Mental and physical workload indirectly impacted unsafe behaviour through physical fatigue (? = 0.288, p = 0.003; ? = 0.15, p = 0.031). It can be concluded; mental load significantly affects unsafe behaviour directly and indirectly through mental and physical fatigue. Physical workload impacts unsafe behaviour directly and through physical fatigue. Therefore, evaluations should focus on reducing work stress and promoting safe work behaviours.
