The most important part in this fuel cell is the polymer electrolyte membrane. Commercial membrane that commonly used is Nafion which has very high cost and high rate of methanol permeation. Sulfonated polystyrene membrane commonly developed as alternative membrane, cannot transport proton properly and has brittle structure. In this research, we try to modify the sulfonated polystyrene with lignin in order to find the best structure and the best chemical properties of membrane fuel cell application. This modification used variation amounts of lignin in PSS-lignin membrane, which has 1%, 5%, 7% and 10% w/w lignin with 15% w/w PSS in DMF solvent. Characterization result showed that PSS-lignin membrane with composition of 15%:7% has the best properties equal to another membrane composition, especially in mechanical property test, IEC and conductivity test. PSS-lignin membrane with PSS-lignin composititon of 15%:7% is optimal composition based on this analysis. text
