For example, in Indonesia, significant government investments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have supported this digital transformation in schools. Technological advancements have significantly boosted the accessibility,
efficiency, and effectiveness of education worldwide. Digital tools, software, and
platforms have revolutionized learning by enabling students to access a wide range
of updated materials and connect with educators and peers globally. For example,
in Indonesia, significant government investments in Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) have supported this digital transformation in
schools. However, this rapid adoption of technology has often neglected the
environmental costs, particularly the increase in electronic waste and energy
consumption, which contributes substantially to carbon emissions. Secondary
schools, in particular, have become notable sources of carbon emissions due to
their heavy use of electronic devices.
Previous studies have explored the importance of carbon footprint assessments
within the educational sector. These studies emphasize the necessity for tools that
enable students and institutions to calculate and mitigate their carbon outputs
actively. However, there exists a stark gap in the development of specialized
monitoring applications tailored for secondary educational settings, which can
systematically manage and reduce their environmental impact.
Recognizing this issue, this research focuses on creating a carbon emission
monitoring and prediction system tailored for secondary educational institutions.
This system aims to embed sustainability into the use of educational technologies,
guiding policymakers, educators, and stakeholders towards environmentally
responsible decisions. By leveraging the CRISP-DM framework, the research uses
operational data and emission expectations to develop predictive models and
optimization strategies for purchasing electronics in schools.
Early implementation of this system in schools that heavily use electronic devices
shows that, while their carbon emissions are significant, although they are still
lower than the average household emissions in the United States. The system
features an intuitive interface, making it easy for schools to access predictive results
and make informed purchasing decisions, thereby fostering more sustainable
practices and raising awareness about the importance of reducing carbon
footprints among staff and students.
Overall, this research successfully delivers a practical system for monitoring and
predicting carbon emissions, significantly aiding schools in addressing their
environmental impact with data-driven strategies. |
