Description
Summary:A mandibular distractor is a surgical device used to apply continuous loading forces between two cut segments of the lower jawbone, stimulating the growth of new bone between these segments. The distractor must possess properties such as biocompatibility, strength, corrosion resistance, and other characteristics that support its function. In the field of oral surgery, surgical devices such as mandibular distractors are made from strong, inert, and biocompatible materials like titanium and stainless steel. There are various designs of mandibular distractors available in the market, each with its unique advantages and disadvantages. However, the designs currently available are imported products with relatively high prices. The issues serve as the background for this research. Through a literature review, the author aims to determine the Design Requirements and Objectives (DRO) for a mandibular distractor. Using the same method, the author compares materials and component designs that may meet the DRO. The best material and component design are selected for refinement, stress and deformation analysis, and manufacturing. Through this process, it is hoped that the designed mandibular distractor will meet the required criteria at a lower manufacturing cost.
