NUMERICAL VALIDATION OF A MIXED-MODE BENDING TEST APPARATUS DESIGN FOR CHARACTERIZING ADHESIVELY BONDED ALUMINUM JOINTS BY THE USE OF COHESIVE ZONE MODEL (CZM)

Various standard tests have been developed to characterize the strength of adhesive materials in composite structures. The Mixed-Mode Bending (MMB) test is one of those standard tests, which provides flexibility of testing loads within a wide range of mixed-mode ratios using a single type of spec...

The Mixed-Mode Bending (MMB) test is one of those standard tests, which provides flexibility of testing loads within a wide range of mixed-mode ratios using a single type of specimen geometry. Multiple data reduction methods have been developed and proven to produce accurate results of this standard test in characterizing the strain energy release rate of interlaminar adhesive layer in unidirectional composite materials. However, research in using the MMB test for testing metallic joints remains minimal. A design of the MMB test specifically for testing adhesively bonded aluminum joints, is proposed. A mesh-convergent model using the cohesive zone model (CZM) and Benzeggagh- Kenane model (B-K) model has been created to test the validity of the design numerically. Specimen variations were conducted to test the consistency of the design. Results show that the design is valid and consistent in testing adhesively bonded aluminum joints, with a tendency to perform better in testing stiffer adherents and weaker adhesives. text
