ANALYSIS OF BARTON-BANDIS AND MOHR-COULOMB FAILURE CRITERIA FOR JOINTED ROCK AND ITS APPLICATION TO A HYPOTHETICAL MINE SLOPE

The concept of failure criteria is crucial for determining slope stability. When calculating the safety factor using analytical methods of resisting and driving forces, the product of the area and shear stress acts as the resisting force. INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/85226 The concept of failure criteria is crucial for determining slope stability. When calculating the safety factor using analytical methods of resisting and driving forces, the product of the area and shear stress acts as the resisting force. Currently, various failure criteria exist, including Mohr-Coulomb and Barton-Bandis. The Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is defined as a linear line increasing with respect to the ?-axis by an angle of ?. Meanwhile, Barton-Bandis approximates the strength-failure behavior of jointed rock with a non-linear line. This study investigates the failure criteria for siltstone, sandstone, marl, limestone, schist, and andesite lithologies based on the Mohr-Coulomb and Barton-Bandis models. The investigation of these failure criteria was carried out by modeling a hypothetical slope with vertical joints using RS2 software. Variations in joint depth and joint distance from the slope shoulder were made. The relationship between joint geometry and the critical SRF values obtained for each Mohr-Coulomb and Barton-Bandis failure criterion is explained. text
