The biological treatment of tapioca waste water was carried out aerobically in two phases. Firstly, tapioca waste water was treated by water hyacinth and mixed culture in open plastic pails. Secondly, tapioca waste water was treated by three pure cultures of bacteria isolated from water hyacinths rhizosphere which have been identified as Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas sp., and Salmonella sp. Incubation was held on shaker incubator at 150 rpm and 30 C. TSS (Total Suspended Solid), TDS (Total Dissolevd Solid), BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) as the parameters were measured for twenty days at five days interval. The result from the first phase indicated that water hyacinth reduced TSS and TDS of tapioca waste water was higher than isolated rhizosphere microoganism. The reduction percentage of TSS and TDS were 86.07% and 66.46% respectivelly. The highest reduction of BOD and COD values were obtained on treatment by isolated microorganism, that was 96.04% and 95.93% respectivelly. The result from second phase indicated that all bacterial isolates could not reduce TSS and TDS values, but reduced BOD and COD values. Klebsiella sp. was better in reducing BOD and COD values from waste water of tapioca than Pseudomonas sp. and Salmonella sp. The reduction percentage both parameters were 95.72% (BOD) and 95.93% (COD). From this study it could be concluded that the utilization of water hyacinth and its rhizosphere microorganisms could to reduce TSS, TDS, BOD and COD values from waste water of tapioca. text |
