Summary: | Generally clove leaf oil is not processed. However, it is exported as non gas oil commodity. In food codex rules, clove leaf oil that is exported showed a bright color. The clove leaf oil produced in industry has a dark color, so it does not fulfil the food codex standard. The clove leaf oil is produced by steam distillation of the dried clove leaf. The distillation apparatus used in industry is made of sheet iron and the oil produced has a dark color. In comparison, the clove leaf oil prepared using glass distillation apparatus, the oil obtained has a bright color. The aim of this research is to determine the heavy metals which darkens the clove leaf oil produced in industry. To analyse the trace heavy metals in the clove. leaf oil, it has to be destructed first with concentrated chloric acid, than extracted with suitable reagents. Atomic absorption spectroscopy is used with reagents ammonium pirolidin ditiocarbamat and metil isobutil keton, and ultraviolet spectrophotometric with reagents bathophenantroline, dithizon, oksin (8 hydroxyquinoline). The results showed : Clove leaf oil produced in industry: Fe = 45,4 ppm; Pb = 27,5 ppm; Zn = 3,6 ppm; Cu = 11,7 ppm; Al = 26,3 PPm• Clove leaf oil produced in laboratory: Fe = 4,5 ppm; Pb = 25,6 ppm; Zn = 2,8 ppm; Cu = 6,4 ppm. The amount of Fe found in the clove leaf oil which has a dark color produced in industry is very large, about ten times larger than the amount Fe found in the light colored clove leaf oil produced in laboratory ( distillation apparatus using glass). If the same iron amount is added to the clove leaf oil that has a bright color, than the bright clove leaf oil changes to a dark color similar to the dark clove leaf ail obtained in industry. This indicates that the dark color of the clove leaf oil produced in industry is caused by iron metal, derived from the distillation apparatus. Fe, Zn and Cu metals found in the. clove leaf oil produced in laboratory probable originates from the clove leaf itself. Al metal probably comes from distillation apparatus. The amount of Pb metal found in the clove leaf oil produced in industry is nearly similar to the. clove. leaf oil produced in laboratory, so that it is possible that the PL metal originates from the plant polluted by Pb for instance the air. |
