There are approximately 15,657 people’s markets across Indonesia, serving as pillars of the people's economy with business opportunities that do not require large capital and provide equal opportunities for small and medium traders. In addition to being trading places, people’s markets also support various related professions, such as porters, motorcycle taxi drivers, butchers, and street vendors. This number reflects the importance of people’s markets in Indonesia’s economy and the stability of residents' lives. Therefore, maintaining and enhancing the competitiveness of people’s markets is crucial in facing ongoing economic changes. Aside from economic value, the architectural response to the revitalization of people’s markets also plays a significant role. The design of people’s markets should consider cultural values, meet national standards, and create spaces that support buying and selling activities as well as community development. The design should reflect harmony between traders and buyers and the connection between them. The revitalization project of Kotagede People’s Market aims to rejuvenate the people’s market as a progressive and culturally rich economic hub. The focus of this project is on developing a people’s market design that upholds progressive quality, reliability, and support for local culture. The Legi Market in Kotagede, Yogyakarta, is the main subject of this project. The scope includes developing spaces for buying and selling activities that comply with SNI standards, with special attention to trader training areas, social interaction spaces, and event/exhibition spaces. The Yogyakarta Trade Department and the Yogyakarta City Government are the initiators of this project with the primary goal of enhancing the role of people’s markets in supporting the people's economy and local culture. This research aims to provide in-depth insights into people’s markets, their important values, the challenges they face, and the architectural measures that can be taken to advance people’s markets in the context of revitalization. People’s markets remain a crucial element in Indonesian society and have significant potential to support the people's economy while preserving valuable cultural values. Revitalizing people’s markets is an important step in maintaining the relevance and sustainability of these markets in the future. text
