One of the largest contributors to plastic waste is the cosmetic industry, which drives the packaging market in Indonesia. Among packaging types, plastic packaging is the most widely used in the cosmetic industry, responsible for 61% of the total packaging used in the industry. Currently, completely eliminating the use of plastic packaging is not a feasible solution technically nor economically. However, designing an environmentally friendly plastic packaging is an alternative that can be used to reduce plastic waste and its environmental impact. This research aims to develop a reusable design for plastic packaging, focusing on a packaging type that is widely used in the cosmetic industry. This study was conducted using three approaches: survey research, engineering design, specifically the Kano Model and Quality Function Deployment for Environment (QFDE), and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The survey research was conducted to identify consumer behaviors and habits in using cosmetics and its packaging choices to determine the type of plastic packaging that would be the focus of the research; QFDE was used to develop a reusable plastic cosmetic packaging design that meets customer needs; and LCA was conducted to measure the reduction of environmental impacts from the new packaging design compared to the old packaging design. Based on the survey results conducted on the target market segment, the most widely used plastic packaging for cosmetics is the tube cap type, making it the focus of this research. Based on the needs of consumers in the target market segment for tube cap packaging and the principles of environmentally friendly product development, a reusable tube cap packaging design was developed using the QFDE methodology. The key characteristics of the new tube cap design include a tube cap with a wider body diameter the use of easily recyclable materials. According to the LCA, the proposed new packaging design successfully reduced environmental impacts by 71.50% on climate change, 35.48% on freshwater xiv ecotoxicity, 50.78% on human toxicity, 35.50% on marine ecotoxicity, and 52.90% on terrestrial ecotoxicity. text
