PRAPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SULFONATED POLYPROPYLENE ULTRAFILTRATION MEMBRANE FOR PEAT WATER TREATMENT
Unequal clean water access is one of unsolved sanitation issue in Indonesia which led people to depend on nearly surface water as their water source. This could cause a problem for people who lived in peatland area. Peat water has a brown colour with high concentration of organic matters which do...

This could cause a problem for people who lived in peatland area. Peat water has a brown colour with high concentration of organic matters which doesn’t fulfil the existing standards. To solve the issue, technologies have been developed to treat peat water, including ultrafiltration (UF) membrane. This study used polypropylene (PP) membrane due to its high chemical and mechanical stability, relatively low price, and availability. However, PP had a hydrophobic nature and couldn’t eliminate organic matters effectively. To solve the issue, surface modification is conducted by using sulfonation. In this study, hollow fibers PP membranes are sulfonated in 95% concentrated sulfuric acid with variation of sulfonation time and temperature. Results showed that membrane sulfonated for 4 hours at temperature 90? is the best variations for increasing water flux and removing colour and organic matters from peat water, with colour and organic matters removal efficiency of 99% and 72% respectively text |
