Summary: | This study evaluates the performance of a modified septic tank (MST) system integrated with a microbial fuel cell (MFC) for treating domestic wastewater from office buildings. Office building wastewater has distinct characteristics compared to typical domestic wastewater, as it contains higher nutrient levels but lower organic content. Therefore, an appropriate treatment technology is required to ensure that the wastewater from office buildings meets the standards set by the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 68 of 2016. The MST-MFC system uses Zinc and Copper electrodes in a dual-chamber configuration, aiming to improve the removal efficiency of organic matter and nutrients while generating electricity. This study involved varying the organik loading rate (OLR) to observe its effects on organik and nutrien removal and electricity production. The results showed that the MST-MFC system achieved average removal efficiencies of 88.604% for COD, 36.315% for ammonia, 31.429% for TN, and 99.471% for TP at OLR 1, and 86.159% for COD, 38.174% for Ammonia, 31.25% for TN, and 96.05% for TP at OLR 2. The average electricity production, measured as power, was 0.02 mW at OLR 1 and 0.018 mW at OLR 2. These findings suggest that integrating MFC technology into modified septic tanks not only enhances wastewater treatment efficiency but also provides additional benefits in the form of renewable energy production |
