Summary:The application of ozone to drinking water treatment was examined using batch contactor with volume of 7 L. The effect of pH, contact times and characteristic of water on residual ozone and aldehyde formation were investigated at this research. Sample collected from water treatment facilities PDAM Dago, two types of water were used: water from prasedimentation unit and filtration unit.<p> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Decomposition of ozone and its reaction is dependent from pH, alkalinity and water quality. Acidic pH and radical scavenger present in water (carbonates, bicarbonates and alcohol primer) can increase residual of dissolve ozone. The aldehyde formation level in the ozonated water dependent from ozone exposure and type of precursor. At sample of water from prasedimentation, the higher doses of ozone, increase aldehyde formation. At sample of water from filtration unit the higher doses of ozone, decrease aldehyde formation. This result influenced by quantity hydrophobic material which dominant at water sample from prasedimentation unit.<p> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Aldehyde which formed consisting of 8 type, but which known can generate health effect is hexanal. At water sample from filtration with C.T. under 0,08 mg. minute /L, and also at water sample from unit prasedimentation with C.T. under 0,2 mg. minute /L, aldehyde is not detected. pH influence only significance when contact of 3 minute. This research also proved the formation of LMW organic in ozonation process. These organic by-products serve as carbon source for bacteria, potentially causing regrowth process.
