Description
Summary:The object of analysis in this research is the transom structure of the Indonesia high speed train’s carbody. Currently, the development of the high-speed train has passed the conceptual design phase and is planned to enter the production phase soon. To ensure the successful production of high speed train components, the manufacturability and assemblability aspects must be analyzed based on the design in advance to prevent unwanted losses in the production phase. The analysis method used in this research is design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA), which contains guidelines for the manufacturing and assembly process and quantification methods to measure the difficulty and efficiency of both processes. The DFMA analysis on the transom structure design was conducted using two methods, which are the Lucas-Hull method and the Boothroyd-Dewhurst method. The output of the Lucas-Hull method is in the form of efficiency variables, namely functional efficiency of 100%, handling ratio of 1.59, and assembly ratio of 5.85. On the other hand, the Boothroyd-Dewhurst method has an output DFA index value of 22.60%. The analysis results show that the design is generally efficient, except for the assembly ratio, which is still above the threshold. However, this can be understood as a consequence of technical requirements and current technological limitations. This research also discusses comparison of the two DFMA methods used to analyze the design efficiency of the transom structure. The results show that the main differences between the two methods are in the level of information required for the analysis and also in the analysis methodology used. The Lucas-Hull method is more suitable for application in the conceptual design phase of the product life cycle, while the Boothroyd-Dewhurst method is more suitable for application after the parametric design of the product has been determined and mass produced.
