Summary: | This research aims to conduct in-depth exploration of technology commercialization at an Indonesian university, which is divided into practical model of technology commercialization at an Indonesian university that consider stakeholders’ interest and integrated policies and supports for each technology commercialization channel. From the findings, we then propose a recommendation for managing technology commercialization at university.
This research adopts pragmatism as research philosophy with abductive as approach for theory development. We use case study from seven commercialization initiatives at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia. We also conduct interview to the university management, the TTO manager, the incubator manager, the Science and Technopark manager, the university’s company for commercialization with 18 intervewees in total. Following cross-case analysis, we finally conduct triangulation by Forum Group Discussion (FGD) and secondary data such as document, website, and social media. We did data collection from May 2022-July 2023.
By using institutional theory, stakeholder theory, and innovation system as underlying theories, we can identify stakeholders within university and their respective interests. Then, through understanding the dimensions of commercialization, we can divide the stages of commercialization into three groups, namely laboratory, intermediary, and industry. The interaction of the three through a linear relationship was found to be a practical model of technology commercialization at an Indonesian university. From this model, four commercialization channels at universities were found, namely establishing spin-off companies, licensing, joint operations, and joint ventures. From each of them, we propose integrated policies and supports that consider key success factors and the commercialization phase so that commercialization can be achieved successfully.
This study is limited by the fact that it only examines seven case studies of successful commercialization initiatives, rather than include any unsuccessful ones. In addition, the research findings are not at the forefront of technology and the commercialization activities are restricted to the domestic market. In conclusion, this research suggests a course of action for effectively overseeing the technology commercialization at universities, especially to the Indonesian environment, going forward.
From the existing literature, most models of technology commercialization in higher education explain the process in general, not divided into several stages and there are no implications for policy and support so that it becomes impractical. This study tries to fill this gap by proposing a model that captures the entire process of technology commercialization in higher education and accommodates the interests of each stakeholder involved in the process. The approach includes practical characteristics, notably being feasible, proactive, and focused on objectives. Another novelty of this research involves the incorporation of integrated policies and supports. These recommendations relate to the crucial factors that lead to success and the different stages of the commercialization process. |
