Summary: | Indonesia is undergoing a significant demographic transition characterized by an ageing population. The increase in the elderly population is expected to transform Indonesia’s demographic pyramid from an expansive to a stationary one by 2045. In response, the Indonesian government, through Bappenas, has announced a pivotal initiative aimed at enhancing life expectancy through improvements in Quality of Life (QoL). QoL is a crucial indicator of elderly well-being, influencing social interaction, physical health, intellectual engagement, and happiness among seniors. This project examines how architecture can promote elderly well-being by enhancing QoL. It utilizes the salutogenesis theory, proposed by Aaron Antonovsky in 1971, translated into an architectural framework known as salutogenic architecture theory.
Bandung City, designated as an Elderly-Friendly City, has implemented various facilities to support seniors’ activities. However, existing provisions have not sufficiently addressed how elderly communities can engage in hobbies and regular activities in designated spaces. Consequently, this project aims to design a community hub that fosters physical and mental health among the elderly in Bandung City. The Tegallega sub-region was chosen due to its high concentration of elderly residents. This project aims to raise awareness of the importance of addressing elderly welfare, enabling Indonesia to confront the challenges of an ageing population more effectively and responsively.
