Summary: | The increasing demand for building aesthetics has driven the emergence of irregular structural designs. This trend introduces challenges in achieving adequate strength, stiffness, and ductility of the structures, resulting in significant analytical complexities. Geometric irregularities in structures cause additional torsional effects and higher vibration modes, requiring in-depth analysis to comprehensively understand structural behavior. One of the approaches in designing such structures is the determination of principal axes. This is particularly crucial for irregular buildings as the principal axes accommodate lateral loads. This study examines three methods for determining the principal axes in extremely irregular, non-parallel structure. These methods are compared and evaluated for their effectiveness, with structural performance assessed through nonlinear time-history analysis. Nonlinear time-history analysis provides a more realistic representation of structural responses, including base shear, inter-story drift ratios, total displacement, and the level of damage to structural elements.
