Description
Summary:The rapidly growing fast fashion industry has a significant impact on the environment, including an increase in textile waste. There is research conducted by Wrap (2020), there is a tendency for people globally to only use 20-30% of the number of clothes in the closet and the rest is left to accumulate, potentially becoming textile waste. One solution that can be applied in overcoming this problem is the application of upcycling techniques, which is able to extend the lifespan of post-consumption clothing by processing it into new products with aesthetic and functional value. This design aims to design the application of the upcycling concept for fashion products based on individual preferences, especially for young urban female consumers. This design method uses a qualitative design approach, involving data collection through observation, in-depth interviews, and respondent preference testing. The design process was conducted using the design thinking method to design clothes to understand the needs, wants, and difficulties of consumers and produce fashion solutions that are not only visually appealing but also practical, sustainable, and innovative. With moulage and patchwork techniques, utilizing old clothes to create new sustainable products. The design results show that upcycling techniques are not only effective in reducing textile waste, but also produce products that are aesthetically relevant and in line with consumer preferences. This design makes an important contribution to the development of sustainable fashion strategies in Indonesia and educates the public on the importance of a more environmentally responsible lifestyle.
