Description
Summary:Abstract:

The prediction of the seismic lateral earth pressure is an important aspect in the designing a basement of a multi stories building located in a seismic area. Two greatly different approaches have been widely used. They are pseudostatic and dynamic analyses.

This study compares the seismic lateral earth pressures, acting on a 20 meter depth basement, predicted by the pseudostatic and that by the dynamic analysis. Also shown in this study, those comparisons for the cases there is a 36 meter height multi stories upper structure connected to that basement. In the analyses, the soil condition is considered as the soft soil and the base rock is located at 30 meter and 100 meter depths. The applied earthquake mechanism is subduction and strike-slip with peak base accelerations (PBA) of 0,1g and 0,3g. The analyses were conducted by the help of a finite element computer program PLAXIS Version 7.2.

The shear wave velocities Vs and Rayleigh damping coefficient a and (3 were the input parameters for the analyses. The Vs was obtained from the empirical correlation to the value of Standard Penetration Test. The Rayleigh coefficient a and (3 were predicted by trial and error with the help of a computer program NERA for 5 percent damping.

The results of this study show that the seismic lateral pressure predicted by the pseudostatic analysis are larger than those predicted by the dynamic analysis. For the case of basement without upper structure, the maximum seismic lateral earth pressure occurs at depths vary from 0,1 h to 0,3h from the ground surface, in which h is the depth of the basement. For the case of the basement with 36 meter height upper structure, this maximum seismic lateral pressure encounters at a depth of approximately 0,35h from ground surface.
