INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/86685 Tarung Sarung is a film that highlights the rich Bugis culture in Makassar, Indonesia. The film portrays Bugis masculinity through characters and ornaments that emphasize attributes of courage, strength, and honor. The main character is depicted as an ordinary young man from the city who, throughout the storyline, develops into a skilled martial artist and warrior. This research aims to analyze the symbols of masculinity within Bugis cultural ornaments featured in Tarung Sarung and to interpret the meanings of these masculinity symbols. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics method and visual text analysis based on the cinematography of the film. This method was chosen for its ability to reveal deeper meanings and relationships of signs in the film's visual elements and cinematography, which are relevant for analyzing the symbolism and messages conveyed. The findings reveal that cultural elements such as the Lipa Sabbe sarong symbolize identity and honor, Passapu signifies social status and authority, while the traditional dagger Badik represents courage and strength. The colors red and yellow in these elements emphasize hegemonic masculinity values, such as bravery and nobility, within the Bugis cultural context. Furthermore, the Sigajang Laleng Lipa tradition portrayed in the film underscores the importance of maintaining dignity and self-respect through cultural symbols. Tarung Sarung illustrates how Bugis traditions and masculinity values contribute to shaping cultural identity. The symbols presented not only serve as visual representations but also convey messages about the importance of balancing modernity and tradition within Bugis culture. This study enhances the understanding of masculinity as an integral part of social relations and local cultural values. text
