Methylene blue has toxic and carcinogenic properties, also cannot be decomposed naturally. Adsorption can be carried out as one of the methods to deal with this problem. ?-Carrageenan as an adsorbent is an effective solution, because ?-carrageenan is easily obtained, has a simple adsorption process, can be applied on a large scale, and can be naturally degraded. In this study, ?-carrageenan was cross- linked with KCl to form a gel cut into cubes, then the drying and soaking methods were varied. The adsorbent with KCl soaking and dried with freeze-dry was chosen as the adsorbent in this study. The selected adsorbent was then characterized with FTIR, showing a shift in wavenumbers due to the cross-linking of K+ and the adsorbed methylene blue. The adsorbent was also characterized with SEM-EDS, the SEM-EDS result showed that the adsorption was a success. The adsorption process reached optimum conditions at a pH of 5, an adsorbent mass of 0,1 grams, and a contact time of three hours, resulting in a maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) of 128,70 mg/g. This adsorption follows the pseudo-second order kinetic model, the Langmuir isotherm model, exothermic, becomes more disordered, and proceeds spontaneously. The desorption study shows that the optimum time for releasing methylene blue from the adsorbent is one hour. text
