Summary: | Limited sources of energy and high amount of waste are problems that occurred in Indonesia. In 2008, among 38.5 million ton/year waste in Indonesia, 14% of them is plastic. Pyrolysis, a technology of waste to energy, is one of the method to reduce the problem of limited energy resources and high amount of waste in Indonesia. Variation of the pyrolysis conducted in this study is the heating time. The heating time is one of the factors that influence amount of products and the energy needs of the pyrolysis process. Pyrolysis process is done by heating 1 kg of plastic waste LDPE and HDPE for 90, 105, 120, and 135 minutes. With increasing the heating time, the amount of oil produced by the pyrolysis process is likely to increase. Pyrolysis of LDPE for 90 minutes up to 135 minutes produced 17.37% - 29.72% oil, 57.55% - 63.67% char, and 12.52 to 18.96% non-condensable gas. Pyrolysis of HDPE for 90 minutes up to 135 minutes produced 46.87% - 61.29% oil, 12.21% - 26.76% char, and 21.59 to 26.50% non-condensable gas. Amount of oil produced by pyrolysis of HDPE for 105 minutes has reached 60% of the total pyrolysis products. After that heating time, increasing of the amount of oil occurred in low amount, which is 0.33% - 0.35%. Char produced by pyrolysis of LDPE and HDPE has calorific value 38.49 MJ/kg to 46.80 MJ/kg so that it has approached the quality of coal. Non-condensable gas produced by pyrolysis of LDPE and HDPE in each variation such as NO2, CO, and SO2 have concentration 0.034 mg/Nm3 up to 1.993 mg/Nm3 so that the gases don’t exceed the standard quality of air emissions in incinerator that attached on Peraturan Menteri Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan Republik Indonesia No.70 tahun 2016. Although pyrolysis of LDPE and HDPE plastics has the potential to produce alternative fuels, pyrolysis does not have potential economic and energy. With increasing heating time of pyrolysis, the energy losses and economic losses increased. |
