Description
Summary:This study evaluates the performance of Engineered Rock Cover (ERC) as a cover material during simulated storm events. Two test plots ·were constructed near the upper bench of the Lower Wanagon Overburden System, each measuring approximately 75 m by 30 m with 2H: 1 V si11face slopes. Test Plot -1 used run-of mine overburden material, while Test Plot -2 featured a two-meter coarse rock cover mimicking ERC. Both plots were equipped with collection ditches leading to a Parshall flume for runoff measurement. Rainfall was simulated using 7 sprinkler lines :,paced 4 m apart, with sprinklers at 4 m intervals. Rainfall gauges were placed in the upper and lower parts of each plot. Surface runoff was captured by a lined collection channel. Simulated rainfall events were designed to replicate 100-year, 15-minute and 100-year, 60-minute storms. Six simulated rainfall tests were conducted. The peak flow results showed that runoff.from Test Plot -1 (no ERC) had greater peak runoff intensity than Test Plot -2 (2 m ERC layer). Runoff peaks were generally higher for test Plot -1 (Simulation Test 1) than Test Plot -2 (Simulation Tests 2 and 4) for similar rainfall intensities. Test Plot-2 exhibited longer hydrograph recession limbs, indicating greater storage. Simulation Tests 5 and 6, which applied rainfall to only the upper or lower half of Test Plot-2, showed that most runoff was generated along the lower ha(f of the plot.
