Summary: | In nature, variation of magnetic minerals depends on environment condition in which the minerals were formed. Magnetic properties might also vary depending on the sources and transport processes of magnetic minerals. In this study we investigate the mineralogy and morphology of magnetic mineral extracted from the erupted mud in the Porong area, Sidoarjo, East Java. The investigation is based on Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analyses of selected samples. The SEM and EDS analyses verified the presence of iron oxide (titanomagnetite, titanohematite /titanomaghemite and ilmenite) and iron sulphide (pyrrite and pyrrhotite). The presence of iron oxides indicates that these minerals occur under oxic condition (in recent sediment). The presence of iron sulphides gives an indication that some parts of the sediments were formed in anoxic environments, which are typical of deeper strata (around the sulphate methane transition). Probably occurs on Upper Kalibeng formation which contain of clay (bluish gray clay). |
