Summary: | The author views bed rotting as a significant contemporary cultural phenomenon
that needs to be addressed and responded through the creation and the
report-writing of this work of art. This work stands as a space for the author to
express her personal ideas regarding the narrative of bed rotting as the kind of
social phenomenon which in recent years has become widespread in society.
Based on literature studies and also the author's personal perspective who has
had directly experienced similar bed rotting-related experiences, the author
represents the ideas that the author has contemplated regarding the topic of bed
rotting through her work called Selama(-lamanya) di Rumah. Aside from
highlighting and exploring a topic that the author has an interest in, the work’s
creation is also intended to be a final conclusion of the entire artistic research
process and personal experimentation with the clay medium that the author has
carried out during her time at ITB ceramics art studio.
During this work’s creation process, the author used several theories to base her
artistic creation, such as the theory of the bed rotting phenomenon as a self-care
trend used by the younger generation, the theory of the ‘ephemerality’ approach
within the scope of contemporary ceramic art, and the theory of art as a
multisensory experience. The subject matter of this art work is a bedroom object
whose internal contents represent the impacts of bed rotting, since the author
views a bedroom as the place where bed rotting experiences most commonly
occur, therefore it is considered to be able to tell a story about the behavior and
mental state of the owner of the room based on the specific arrangement of the
contents and the state of the room.
In terms of technical and media exploration, the author displays the artwork as a
closed installation room that at the same time is situated in a public place as a
way to show its site-specific characteristic. The visualization of the space within
which depicts the atmosphere that would be likely to occur during bed rotting,
where it would look unkempt and neglected. Additionally, the author also utilized
materials like soil, worm microorganisms, and organic waste that are being
processed as a growing media in this context and related to the perspective of
ephemerality. This act of process a growing media displays a transient nature that
is tied to the idea of ‘rotting’ when bed rotting takes place. Through the several
chosen artistic approaches used here, the author then opens up a dialogue about
how bed rotting creates conditions of being trapped and isolated which can be
interpreted as a decaying process of the soul and the mental well-being of the
sufferer. |
