Steud.). An investigation on flower and fruit development of lengkeng (Euphoria Tongan (Lour.) Steud.) was carried out to understad the structure of the flower and inflorescence, the development of the gynoecium, pollination and pollen tube growth, and fruit development. The morphplogical development of the flower was observed from bud stage until anthesis. For anatomical observations, various stages of development of the flower and fruit were fixed in FAA, dehydrated in a tertiary butyl alcohol series and then infiltrated and embedded in paraffin. Serial sections of the material 6-7 um in thickness were made and stained with Hemalum Mayer. To detect pollen viability and pollen tube growth histochemical methods were used. The results showed that the paniculate inflorescence developed both staminate and hermaphrodit flowers. In the hermaphrodite flower a two carpellate, syncarpous gynoecium with two locales was formed. Each locu1e contained one anatropous ovule, but only one ovule completed its developmet. Megasporogenesis in the developing ovule is moriosporic and the development of the embryosac conforms to the polygonum type. The style is of the solid type and shows tram faitting tissue in its centre, which connects with the dry, papillate stigma. Towards the proximal end of the style, the transmitting tissue connects with the locular cavity. Anthers in the staminate flower dehisce at anthesis and produce viable pollen. In the hermaphrodite flower, anthers do not dehisce and the pollen within do not show viability. At pollination, pollen adhere to the surface of the papilla on the stigma, and germinate. A pollen tube will grow into the stigmatal tissue through the intercellular cavities to the area of transmitting tissue in the style and continues towards the locule. Fertilization occured around 4 days after anthesis. A tissue protrusion on the funiculus, which was formed early in the ovular development, starts proliferation at the 35th day after anthesis, and produces a tissue which surrounds the ovule. This tissue develops into the edible arillus. At artificial pollination, 86.08 % of the total number of hermaphrodite flowers develop into fruits which is a 41.64 % increase from natural pollination. <br /> text |
